Struggling to feel grateful this time of year? It may be because you value your independence.
Anthony Ahrens of American University conducted research into this issue. People who value their independence, or have a high degree of autonomy, have less gratitude. This is a problem if you are concerned about your overall health. Grateful people experience better sleep at night, report having more energy, and experience lower levels of depression and heart disease.
People can incorporate mindfulness into their daily lives to increase their gratitude.
