Teen Anxiety Program

Does your teen worry excessively?

Are you concerned about your teen’s struggle with perfectionism?

Has your teen ever avoided something because of panic or anxiety?

Village Counseling and Wellness’s 10-Week Teen Anxiety Program can help your teen learn how to handle the anxiety and emotional distress that can peak during adolescence.

Anxiety is a normal human emotion. But when we experience it in excess, it can cause emotional avoidance – when something causes big emotions like sadness or fear, it’s natural to want to avoid it. When teens engage in emotional avoidance, they can become stuck in a very limited world that perpetuates the cycle of avoidance and miss out on a lot of real-world experiences that would help them grow into mature, well-rounded adults.

We created the Teen Anxiety Program to help teenagers build the coping skills to manage their anxiety (and co-morbid depression) effectively and learn how to engage with (rather than avoid) things that trigger their worry or fear.

By learning how to do something we call approach, your teen can develop life skills like resilience, grit, and perseverance that will allow them to engage with the very things that cause their anxiety. These life skills will help expand their world and allow them to learn from all of the varied and rich emotional experiences in life, including things like falling in love, taking new risks, trying new activities, or even preparing to go away to college!

Our 10-Week Teen Anxiety Program integrates evidenced-based therapy modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness to help teens conquer anxiety and co-morbid depression, and is designed specifically for teens who:

  • Struggle with perfectionism

  • Don’t allow themselves to make a mistake

  • Get their self-worth from external validation

  • Give up when things get hard

  • Refuse to try something new due to fear of failure

  • Feel inadequate when they fail at something

In our Teen Anxiety Program, your teen will learn how to do things like:

  • Identify the range of emotions they feel

  • Use mindfulness and grounding techniques to lower their anxiety in the moment

  • Sit with uncomfortable feelings like anger, worry, fear and sadness

  • Challenge the thought processes that cause negative self-talk or feelings of inadequacy

  • Connect with their body to develop more self-awareness and a better understanding of how their anxiety works

  • Find a sense of resilience when they don’t succeed at something

We have structured our Teen Anxiety Program using an evidenced-based treatment approach. Because of its nature, we do not customize or change the nature of the program. The program curriculum includes:

  • Goal setting

  • Behavioral experiments

  • Cognitive flexibility

  • Present moment awareness

  • Situational Exposures

  • Emotion identification
